Illuminating the Heart of Taiwan

Let Light Tell Our Stories
The Story Lamp Journey: Illuminating the Heart of Taiwan
It all started back in 2018, in a small corner of Taipei called Wansheng Community.
At that time, I had a simple wish — to help children see their families and their hometowns through a different kind of light. Quite literally.
We began building story lamps — handmade lights that could carry the warmth of family memories and local stories. Each child designed a lamp inspired by their grandparents’ tales, neighborhood legends, or their own imagination. And when the lamps lit up, the whole room seemed to breathe with stories that had been quietly waiting to be told.
Where It All Began
Our very first Story Lamp Festival was held in 2018. The children explored their families’ histories, collected stories, and turned them into glowing artworks. Some stories were funny, others deeply moving — but all of them revealed how much life exists in the small corners of home.
In 2019, we expanded the project through STEAM education, combining art, technology, and storytelling. Children learned how to connect their family memories with the city’s cultural heritage. During the Taipei Lantern Festival that year, students and grandparents worked side by side, crafting lamps with traditional paper-cutting techniques — a beautiful dialogue between generations, lit by soft, trembling light.
New Chapters in Light and Sound
In 2020, our theme was “The Memory of Water.”
Students and parents built a story boat and explored Taipei’s hidden waterways — discovering how rivers have quietly shaped the city for centuries. Their work was later displayed at the Treasure Hill Light Festival, where the lights shimmered like rippling memories on the walls.
Then came 2021, when we turned to “The Memory of Sound.”
Children recorded songs their grandparents loved and created small music boxes that played these tunes. Each melody became a bridge between generations — a reminder that love, once heard, never really disappears.
What We Do Today
Our workshops still follow the same heartbeat:
Collect family stories through interviews with elders and neighbors.
Turn those stories into art — story lamps, music boxes, or story plates.
Share them with the community, inviting families to see how light and creativity can bring us closer together.
We’ve seen laughter, tears, and many small miracles along the way. A child once told me, “When I see my grandma’s story glowing, it feels like she’s smiling from inside the lamp.” Moments like that remind me why this project matters.
A Light That Keeps Traveling
What began as a small local idea has slowly grown into a way for families — and even communities — to reconnect. The Story Lamp Project has since traveled to festivals and schools, sparking cross-cultural exchanges and inspiring others to share their own stories in light and sound.
But honestly, beyond all the exhibitions and events, what stays with me most is the feeling of togetherness. Every time a lamp lights up, it feels like the room gets a little warmer — and so does the world.
After all, stories are meant to be shared, and light was never meant to shine alone.
