This cross-cultural exchange program is more than just a cultural sharing event; it’s a milestone in innovative education. Through art, students from Taiwan and Japan have connected on a deeper level, exploring their identities and fostering global perspectives. This program has not only enriched students’ lives but also inspired educators to think beyond traditional classroom boundaries.

Echoes of Melody: Tracing Time and Capturing Family Stories in Sound and Light

A collaborative journey between Wanfu Elementary School in Taiwan and Nara Women’s University Affiliated Elementary School in Japan, centered around the theme of “Time Tracks," invited students to explore their personal growth and family memories through art. Launched in October 2023, this cross-cultural initiative fostered numerous online interactions, curriculum exchanges, and in-person visits. In June 2024, the culmination of this journey was a joint exhibition at the Kishuian in Taipei, showcasing the students’ creative expressions. Through public classes, panel discussions, and workshops, this event further deepened the cross-cultural connections formed. This project has not only enriched the lives of the students but also served as a beacon of inspiration for educators, demonstrating the transformative power of arts education in cultivating global citizens.

2021: A New Chapter Begins
Three years ago, fueled by a passion to preserve our family’s auditory memories, we embarked on a series of courses. This journey culminated in a remarkable opportunity to participate in the Treasure Hill Artist Village’s ‘Winter Open House’ in late 2021 (December 4-19). This exhibition marked the beginning of a dream and ignited our hope to expand this course through international exchange.
Following the exhibition, we continued to refine and adjust the course content, anticipating the day when we could share these cherished family sounds with people around the world.

October 2023: The Start of Formal Exchange

After much effort, we reached an important milestone in our cross-national exchange on October 3, 2023. On this day, we held an enthusiastic online meeting with several esteemed artists and art educators from Japan, including Qenji, Mr. Hattori, and Mr. Yamazoe. Prior to this meeting, we spent considerable time exchanging Q&A documents to delve deeply into the core themes and detailed plans of the curriculum. Mr. Hattori, with his keen awareness of the cultural differences between Taiwanese and Japanese students, suggested that “Time Tracks" become the central concept for our innovative courses on both sides.

2023年12月: Rolling Out the Course 課程落地

In the latter half of 2023, our concept was implemented in both Taiwan and Japan. Nara Women’s University Elementary School introduced a curriculum titled “Life Tracks," encouraging students to explore their personal journeys through artistic expression. Concurrently, Wanfu Elementary School in Taiwan conducted workshops centered around “Family Stories and Voices" and “Time Tracks Light Table." A reciprocal visit to Japan was undertaken in late January 2024 for the purpose of educational exchange.

A Cross-Cultural Exchange in Japan

A delegation of six visited Nara, Japan on January 29th, 2024, to engage in a cross-cultural exchange. The primary focus was to observe and learn from the “Life Tracks" program, particularly lessons 5-8. In-depth interviews with Japanese students provided rich data for comparative analysis. Subsequently, a workshop was conducted, introducing the concept of story lamps and facilitating the creation of personal narratives among Japanese students. The resulting artworks were exchanged between the two countries.

Imagine the excitement as Nara kids crafted their own unique story plates, each telling a personal tale. They were captivated by the stories from Taiwan, shared through our magical story lamps. As a special token of our exchange, we swapped the lamps, allowing the Nara kids to delve into the stories of Taiwanese children.

Following our in-person exchange, we continued our journey online. On March 4th, students from both Taiwan and Japan connected virtually to share their progress. This online reunion deepened our cross-cultural bond.

The historic Kishu An in Taipei served as the perfect backdrop for our exhibition, held from June 8th to 14th. Visitors experienced a blend of the old and new as they explored static displays like “Family Stories and Voices" and engaged in dynamic activities such as a storytelling workshop and panel discussion with Japanese scholars. Our static exhibition included “Family Stories and Voices," “Time Tracks Light Table," and the Japanese “Life Tracks."
