Tornado in a Bottle!

雖然我們所在的地方也許很少有龍捲風這樣的災害，或是可以看到漩渦的景象。
但有時在媒體上會看到大自然中這樣可怕的景象。
我們可以再家中用簡單的工具與材料製造出這樣的視覺效果！

Although our location may rarely experience disasters like tornadoes or witness swirling vortexes, we sometimes come across the awe-inspiring scenes of such phenomena in the media. However, we can recreate these visual effects at home using simple tools and materials.

   1.透明寶特瓶 X 2
   2.保麗龍膠或快乾
   3.絕緣膠帶
   4.剪刀或美工刀

給家長與老師：

這課程有兩段，前面的製作會是個基礎，重點放在後段讓孩子發揮創意，使水龍捲這樣的裝置變成有故事性有趣的玩具。所以，大人們可以先做一個給小朋友們玩，讓他們先1.發現現象、2.探索原理 再進行最後階段3.創造創意，最後瓶子的水籠捲不再只是科學玩具。這就是STEAM的精神。

To parents and teachers:

This course consists of two parts. The first part focuses on building a foundation through the construction process, while the emphasis in the second part is on allowing children to unleash their creativity, transforming the water tornado device into an engaging and story-driven toy. Therefore, adults can create a prototype for children to play with, enabling them to:

Discover the phenomenon,
Explore the principles, and
Finally, exercise their creativity.
In this way, the swirling water in the bottle transcends being merely a scientific toy. This embodies the essence of STEAM education, where Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics converge to foster holistic learning experiences for children.

製作：

  1. 將兩個寶特瓶瓶蓋先取下，再中間挖出約 1CM的洞 (讓孩子探索的第一個我通常會挖大一些 約1.2公分，這樣水龍捲出現較無須技巧)
  2. 兩瓶蓋背對背使用保麗龍膠黏上。也可以在大人協助下使用快乾 (須注意安全，避免噴濺與吸入！小朋友勿自己使用！)
  3. 將瓶蓋外用絕緣膠帶纏緊，可以多纏幾圈會比較耐久
  4. 其中一透明寶特瓶裝半瓶水(裝一半即可，因為水太多容易使瓶蓋黏接處鬆脫)
  5. 旋緊瓶蓋就完成了！
To create the water tornado experiment setup:

1.Remove the caps from two plastic bottles and then make a hole in the middle of each bottle, approximately 1 cm in diameter. (As an initial exploration, I usually make the hole slightly larger, around 1.2 cm, so that the water tornado appears with less difficulty.)

2.Take the two caps and attach them back-to-back using Styrofoam glue. Alternatively, with adult assistance, you can use quick-drying glue (taking necessary precautions to avoid spraying or inhaling it! Children should not handle it on their own.)

3.Use electrical insulation tape to securely wrap around the outer part of the caps. You can wrap multiple layers for added durability.

4.Fill one of the transparent bottles halfway with water. Be cautious not to fill it too much, as excessive water may cause the connection between the caps to loosen.

5.Screw the cap tightly onto the bottle.

And there you have it! Your setup is complete.

Now, let's create a pair of bottle sleeves, one for each bottle, and use them to tell an intriguing story. On one sleeve, we can paint a whimsical scene of marine life and the water tornado as the mischievous creature. On the other sleeve, we can illustrate the sea creatures working together to save their home and teach the water tornado valuable lessons about friendship and environmental stewardship.

透過仔細觀察水龍捲中間是中空的。當瓶子剛倒過來時水因為下面瓶子空氣壓力，上方水瓶裡的水並不會落下，輕輕搖晃一下會發現有些其泡上升，水逐漸越來越多往下流也越來越多氣泡往上，就形成像龍捲一樣的現象，也可在水中加入一些金粉或染劑方便觀察。也可放入造型物增加趣味。

孩子創意可以透過有趣的觀察實驗，再讓孩子發揮創意進行轉化！以培養孩子的創造力。如果只是有趣玩一玩不免浪費一個好的課程。希望課程能有層次與質感。不會只是「就這樣啊！」

Through careful observation, we have discovered an interesting phenomenon in water tornadoes. In the center of the tornado, there is a hollow space. When a bottle is initially turned upside down, due to the air pressure at the bottom of the bottle, the water inside the bottle does not immediately flow out. By gently shaking the bottle, you will notice that some bubbles rise to the top, and gradually, more water starts flowing downward while more bubbles rise upward. This creates a tornado-like effect. To make the observation more exciting, you can add some gold powder or dye to the water. You can also include different shapes or objects to enhance the fun.

Children's creativity can be nurtured through engaging and fun observational experiments. Once they have made their observations, encourage them to unleash their creativity and transform their findings into something new and imaginative. This helps to foster their creative thinking abilities. It is important to ensure that the course has depth and substance, rather than just being a one-time "that's it!" experience.
